"Merely nominal and intended to be so"

Why did the relatives give Zacharis one cent? They were pretending to fulfill the requirements of consideration. Pretending that Zacharias gave his promise to get the payment of one cent in return. Thus the court says that "the consideration of one cent is, plainly, in this case, merely nominal [in name only, a pretense], and intended to be so."

This is why the court concludes that there is no consideration.
